Amid the bustling city of Las Vegas, the Ronald McDonald House stands as a comforting refuge for families facing challenging medical journeys. Since 2025, following an invitation from the organization, local Tzu Chi volunteers have regularly visited the facility to prepare nourishing lunches for sick children and their parents who have traveled far for treatment. By serving familiar, comforting flavors, the team aims to soothe the physical and emotional exhaustion of these families as they navigate difficult times.

Serving warmth and comfort through food

The Ronald McDonald House provides essential accommodation and support for families while their children undergo major medical procedures. The monthly meal service is a small but vital component of this support system. From sourcing ingredients to cooking and portioning, every step of the preparation is carefully organized to deliver nutritious meals to those in need.

I used to always wonder if Tzu Chi was a good place. Later, I realized that here, I feel the care between people. — Chien-Sheng Chen, Volunteer

On March 25, 2026, culinary volunteers Yun-Ping Liang (梁雲屏), I-Hwa Kuo (郭伊樺), and Chiu-Lan Lin (林秋蘭) brought their own kitchenware and fresh ingredients to prepare fried rice and spring rolls. The process flows with quiet efficiency, from washing and chopping the vegetables to carefully dividing the portions. Once the cooking is complete, the team promptly cleans and restores the kitchen, ensuring the space remains a peaceful and hygienic environment for families to rest in. This delicate dedication makes the lunch not only a source of physical replenishment but also a source of emotional comfort.

A continuous cycle of giving

For Chien-Sheng, the motivation to serve stems from previous experiences of distributing hot food to those experiencing homelessness. He recognized that beyond the physical sustenance, individuals deeply value the human connection and the feeling of being supported by their community. This realization drives his ongoing commitment to the Ronald McDonald House.

At that moment, you truly feel that what they need is not just food, but human care. When you have the ability, you should pass this love forward. Such services need more manpower. If more volunteers join in the future, we can do more and better.— Chien-Sheng Chen, Volunteer

The meal service program relies on the steady dedication of community members who are willing to share their time. By coming together in the kitchen, the volunteers hope to invite more individuals to participate in this meaningful effort. Through simple acts of care, they strive to bring a little more light and warmth to families in the desert city, showing that a warm meal can carry a profound message of hope.
