On a joyous December day, Tzu Chi volunteers in Chile embarked on a heartfelt mission to bring Christmas cheer to the elderly residents of several care centers. In the spirit of hope, resilience, and compassion, these volunteers demonstrated the transformative power of love and community.
A Visit from Santa Claus
The climax of the event was the arrival of Santa Claus, delighting the elderly who were as excited as children. Every resident wanted to take a photo with Santa and the volunteers, filling the room with laughter and warmth.
Starting on November 30, Tzu Chi volunteers, despite their limited numbers, visited three care centers: Centro El Buen Samaritano, Troncal San Francisco, and Nocedal. These centers house the most vulnerable elderly, and the volunteers’ visits were filled with care, love, and blessings. The timely appearance of Santa Claus with gifts added to the festive atmosphere, making everyone feel cherished.
Nutritious Meals and Heartfelt Company
At Centro El Buen Samaritano, nine volunteers arrived early with nutritious vegetarian breakfasts and ingredients for daily lunches. Volunteer Nelson led the team, ensuring everything was meticulously organized. On behalf of Tzu Chi, volunteers Hsiu-Chuen Li and Cecilia respectfully donated the food with sincere gratitude.
Young volunteers, including Franca and Liliana, assisted by setting up breakfast utensils and preparing low-sugar cookies. In the kitchen, other volunteers made vegetarian sandwiches and hot milk, filling stomachs and lifting spirits. The multi-generational team of volunteers, from young to old, found joy through the process of giving.
A Festive Surprise
After a hearty breakfast, volunteer Cesar hosted a bingo game, a highlight of the year-end festivities. Bingo not only boosted brain functions but also fostered social interactions among the elderly. The joy of winning prizes, such as pillows and stuffed animals, lit up the faces of the participants.
The most awaited moment was the grand entrance of Santa Claus, played by Nelson, accompanied by his son as an elf. The elderly were overjoyed, with one grandma holding Santa’s hand, praying for more blessings. Santa distributed gifts like pajamas and blankets, spreading love and happiness.
Nelson, along with his wife Cecilia, son, and energetic 80-year-old mother Elisa, showed that age is no barrier to compassion. The three generations of volunteers worked together seamlessly, embodying the spirit of unity and selfless service.
Continuing the Journey of Compassion
The following days saw the volunteers visiting Troncal San Francisco and Nocedal care centers, bringing the same warmth and joy. The volunteers' tireless efforts, from providing nutritious breakfasts to hosting engaging activities, ensured that the elderly felt loved and respected.
As the festive season approached, the presence of Santa Claus and the cheerful atmosphere brought a sense of community and belonging to the elderly residents. The Tzu Chi volunteers’ actions not only provided immediate relief but also left a lasting impact, showcasing the enduring power of compassion.
