A Decade of Waiting—Syrian Refugees Finally Return Home

More than a thousand kilometers and ten long years—this was the distance and time separating countless Syrian refugees from their homeland. After years of war and displacement, the ceasefire in Syria has finally made it possible for them to return. Volunteers from Tzu Chi Türkiye have accompanied the refugees on this long-awaited journey home, fulfilling a promise made a decade ago.

A Promise Made, A Promise Kept

Since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war, millions have been forced to flee their country, with many seeking refuge in neighboring Türkiye. In October 2014, Tzu Chi volunteers in Türkiye began their relief efforts, providing aid to displaced Syrian families. Beyond financial and material support, the foundation also established El Menahil International School in Türkiye, offering Syrian refugee children a chance at education and a brighter future.

As the school approaches its tenth anniversary in December 2024, its students—deeply influenced by the teachings of Jing Si Aphorisms and Quranic proverbs—have poured their hopes into colorful artworks, depicting dreams of peace and homecoming.

Tears and Joy—A Journey Back

For some refugees, returning home remains a dream. Volunteer Ishan Asaad, unable to return yet, handed over gifts meant for his family to Tzu Chi volunteer Faisal Hu with tears in his eyes. “For ten years, we have told our Syrian brothers and sisters that one day, we would walk them home,” said Faisal, who, along with his wife, Nadya Chou, accompanied the refugees back to Syria. “I can’t believe this day has finally come—it feels like a dream.”

Tzu Chi volunteer David Yu also joined the return journey, not only accompanying refugees but also visiting long-term partners at the Syrian border to report on the latest conditions to the global community.

Braving Harsh Weather to Return Home

Despite the joy of homecoming, the journey was not without challenges. Northern Türkiye faced a cold front, with rain and snow lowering temperatures to -3 degrees Celsius. Yet, determined to reunite with their homeland, the Syrian refugees pressed forward.

With unwavering support and years of commitment, this journey home has become a reality. The promise made ten years ago has finally been fulfilled.
