In the quiet town of Las Cabras, Chile, something wonderful is happening. Through to the combined efforts of Tzu Chi volunteers, school staff, and families, the Republic School of Greece (Colegio República de Grecia) is being transformed into a place where children can learn and thrive. It all started in November 2024 when the volunteers came together to tackle the school's challenges, guided by their belief that education can open doors to a brighter future.
One of the first changes was to make the kindergarten more welcoming. Volunteers worked to renovate the restroom facilities, adding dividers for privacy. Julio, a parent who is also a school employee, expressed his gratitude, “Now, even the youngest children can use the facilities with dignity. It means so much to us.”

The playground was another focus of the project. With safety flooring and weatherproof walls, it became a space where children could laugh, play, and be themselves. Tzu Chi volunteer Fernanda Wu (吳惠蘭) couldn’t help but smile as she watched kids happily sliding down the new equipment.

It wasn’t just about physical improvements—the community came together in ways that were truly inspiring. Teachers and fifth-grade students joined forces to create a commemorative square for Ms. Paula, a beloved teacher who passed away. Ignacio, a teacher leading the effort, guided the students as they cleared debris and planted greenery. “This square will always remind us of her kindness and love,” shared a young student.
Even an unused plot of land at the school found new life. Ruth, a dedicated teacher, envisioned it as a vegetable garden and a therapeutic space for children facing emotional challenges. “With every plant they nurture, they’ll find peace within themselves,” she explained.

Every corner of the school shows signs of the community’s love and dedication. From a new sliding gate designed for safer arrivals to costumes that helped students shine in national dance competitions, the efforts brought joy and confidence to the young learners.
These changes don’t just enhance the environment—they instill hope and dreams. As Fernanda Wu shared, “We’re not just building walls and floors. We’re building confidence, happiness, and opportunities for these children to reach for the stars.”
