Extreme weather in early December has brought torrential rains to Sri Lanka, leading to widespread and severe flooding across many regions. Roads have been cut off, homes damaged, and countless residents left struggling to meet their basic needs. In response to the crisis, Tzu Chi’s Sri Lanka chapter swiftly activated its emergency relief mechanisms, reaching affected areas to provide immediate and crucial assistance.

One of the hardest-hit areas was Siriyagama village in Hambantota District. Although the floodwaters have gradually receded, the pervasive mud and damaged homes make it difficult for residents to return to normal life. Upon receiving news of the devastation, Tzu Chi volunteers quickly mobilized. Their first priority was to prepare 400 hot meals, offering much-needed sustenance to residents who lacked cooking facilities in the wake of the disaster.

One grateful villager shared how Tzu Chi’s timely arrival brought warmth and rekindled hope during their most challenging moments.

The following day, volunteers gathered again, preparing 1,100 portions of breakfast and bottled water to reach more affected families. However, many roads remained impassable, preventing numerous residents from accessing the distribution points. Undeterred, the volunteers carried the food and water on their backs, trekking four kilometers along muddy paths to deliver supplies door-to-door. As residents received the provisions, they repeatedly expressed their gratitude, remarking, “This is truly precious,” and offered blessings to the volunteers, wishing them “boundless merits.”

Beyond food and water, the floods also caused a critical shortage in local blood banks, placing immense pressure on the medical system. Recognizing this urgent need, Tzu Chi volunteers collaborated with University Hospital KDU (UHKDU) in Colombo to organize an emergency blood drive. The initiative successfully collected 112 bags of blood, providing a vital replenishment to the strained healthcare system.

Dr. Perera of UHKDU extended his appreciation for Tzu Chi’s rapid response to their request, commending the volunteers’ enthusiasm and efficiency. Sergeant Anura, who participated in the blood drive, also noted the remarkable speed with which Tzu Chi mobilized its efforts within just a couple of days.

The timely provision of essential food, clean water, and critical medical supplies brought immediate relief to communities struggling in the aftermath of the floods. For residents facing immense challenges, this support offered a renewed sense of hope and stability. As the recovery process continues, volunteers remain committed to working alongside affected communities, ensuring ongoing care and assistance to help them rebuild their lives and homes.
