On April 5, 2025, the Ganga Bigha Activity Center in Bodh Gaya, India, was filled with anticipation and joy as students and teachers gathered to mark the beginning of a new term for Tzu Chi’s tutoring program. Unlike previous semesters, this time parents were also invited, fostering a deeper connection between families and the education of their children.

Strengthening Family Engagement

This initiative is a significant step forward. Parents often struggle to balance work and their children's education, but Tzu Chi volunteers recognized the importance of collaboration. Parents and students were warmly welcomed at the entrance by volunteer Aliya Rahman, who greeted each family with a smile. One mother, unable to leave her younger child at home, brought them along, showing a strong desire to be involved in her older child’s education.

Inside the classroom, students and parents sat neatly on plastic mats, as chairs were unavailable. The session began with an uplifting song, led by teacher Deepa Singh, which encouraged unity and joy in learning. Teachers explained hygiene and safety guidelines, reinforcing essential practices such as proper handwashing and self-protection.

Overcoming Educational Challenges

Tzu Chi volunteers have been tirelessly supporting the community since December 2023. Initially, families were unfamiliar with the tutoring program, making engagement difficult. Over time, their dedication paid off, with parents starting recognize the benefits. However, attendance remained inconsistent, as rural families often prioritize agricultural work over schooling.

To address this, educators organized home visits. In one case, a student claimed to attend tutoring but was discovered playing elsewhere. These findings led teachers to realize that parental involvement was crucial, resulting in this new effort to unite students, parents, and educators.

Witnessing Transformation

One of the most heartwarming stories came from Rushi Kumari’s family. Once disengaged and frequently late to class, Rushi has undergone a remarkable change. She now actively participates in lessons, completes homework diligently, and has adopted better hygiene and discipline. At home, she assists her family with daily chores, an improvement her parents gratefully acknowledge.

Her father, Shambhu Kumar, said, “She has learned so much. Not just academics, but responsibility. We are deeply thankful to the teachers for their care.” Rushi herself expressed her preference for this program over other tutoring classes, stating, “Here, teachers truly care about every student.”

Looking ahead, Tzu Chi volunteers remain committed to walking alongside these students, knowing that education is the key to transforming lives. As long as children are willing to learn, they will continue to teach, nurture, and guide them toward brighter futures.
