In the early hours of July 14, 2024, Tzu Chi volunteers embarked on a journey to Pahokng Sompak, a remote village in West Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. Navigating rugged roads and dense palm oil plantations, the team pressed on with a singular mission: to bring medical care to a community with no access to nearby healthcare facilities.

For the villagers, many of whom are farmers, medical treatment often means hours of costly travel—an option few can afford. The arrival of Tzu Chi’s free clinic was a beacon of hope, addressing not just medical needs but also restoring a sense of dignity and care.

Overcoming Challenges to Deliver Care

The free clinic, organized by Tzu Chi’s Singkawang team, ran from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., serving 136 villagers. Supported by 30 volunteers and 11 medical professionals—including two doctors and a pharmacist from Pontianak—the clinic offered essential services such as blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar testing, along with uric acid monitoring.

Resi, a local health officer, expressed heartfelt gratitude: “It’s rare for medical teams to visit Pahokng Sompak. Without this clinic, residents would need to travel to Karangan for care. Thank you for making this possible.”

The joy of the villagers was matched by the fulfillment felt by volunteers and medical professionals alike. “This was a completely new experience for us,” shared Dr. Fadilah from Pontianak. “We’ve learned so much and are eager to participate in future outreach events.”

Laying the Foundation for Sustainable Care

In addition to providing immediate medical relief, the outreach included health education sessions aimed at empowering villagers to prevent common diseases. Volunteers demonstrated simple yet effective practices to promote long-term well-being.

The event also inspired new aspirations. Pontianak volunteer Jian-Qiang Zhong expressed hope for greater involvement in the future: “We look forward to returning and perhaps even taking on the responsibility of organizing future clinics, inviting the Singkawang team to join us.”

The success of this event planted the seeds for a larger vision: establishing a Tzu Chi medical association in Pontianak. Volunteers are now committed to recruiting more healthcare professionals to expand their reach and ensure sustainable care for underserved areas.

Transforming Lives Through Compassion

The challenges of distance and terrain are no match for the dedication of Tzu Chi volunteers, whose efforts continue to touch lives in even the most remote villages. By bringing medical care to Pahokng Sompak, they not only addressed immediate health concerns but also inspired a ripple effect of compassion and collaboration.

As the volunteers and villagers parted ways, the spirit of the day lingered—a testament to the transformative power of care, teamwork, and a shared mission of love.
