Under the unrelenting April sun, villagers in Silaunja, Bodh Gaya, gathered with a sense of curiosity and hope. Cardiologist Dr. Suwen Kumar, clad in his Tzu Chi International Medical Association (TIMA) uniform for the very first time, arrived to bring not only healthcare but also a message of empowerment to this underserved community.

After over a decade of practicing medicine in the United States, Dr. Suwen answered an inner calling to return to his roots. Partnering with Dr. Alok Kumar, a specialist in community healthcare, and guided by Tzu Chi’s ethos, his journey has been one of service and love, aimed at addressing the critical healthcare needs of his hometown.

The gathering in Silaunja was more than just a medical check-up—it was an educational endeavor. Dr. Suwen's presentation highlighted the dangers of heatstroke, a pressing concern exacerbated by the rising temperatures linked to global warming. He recounted the tragic toll of the 2024 heatwave in Bihar, which claimed the lives of polling officials during the state elections. Through practical advice on hydration, protective clothing, and cooling techniques, Dr. Suwen armed villagers with life-saving knowledge.

The impact of this session was heartfelt. Jamuna Manjhi, a local resident, shared, “The doctors and volunteers have shown us how to protect ourselves and our families. Something as simple as preparing lemon water can make a huge difference.”

Following the seminar, the team conducted health screenings for over fifty villagers, checking vital signs, glucose levels, and urine samples. The findings revealed common conditions like hypertension and diabetes, emphasizing the need for ongoing care. With compassion and diligence, Dr. Suwen and his team offered medical advice and referrals to ensure these issues do not go untreated.

The event was not just about addressing immediate health concerns; it reflected Dr. Suwen’s broader vision. “Every year, temperatures rise, and the risk of heat-related illnesses increases,” he explained. “If we can educate people and prevent these cases, we can save lives.”

Dr. Alok added, “Good health stems from small, consistent habits. By adopting healthier lifestyles and maintaining cleanliness, we can prevent many illnesses.”

Before departing, Tzu Chi volunteers provided oral rehydration salts and electrolyte packets to villagers, ensuring they are equipped to stay hydrated in the oppressive heat.

Dr. Suwen's commitment to his community extends far beyond these mobile health clinics. Inspired by Tzu Chi’s holistic approach to humanitarian work, he envisions a future where Bodh Gaya is home to a fully equipped hospital, offering comprehensive medical care to those who need it most.

During his visit to Taiwan’s Tzu Chi Hospital, Dr. Suwen witnessed the profound impact of integrating charity, medicine, education, and humanistic culture. This experience solidified his determination to create a similar model in his hometown.
