A Rare Condition and a Family’s Struggle 

Abidzar Akbar was born with Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affected the bones and structure of his face. This condition not only altered his appearance but also impeded the growth of his jaw, making it difficult for him to chew. His parents, Nazaruddin and Erni Lestari Handayani, sought medical help in Medan City but were unable to find a hospital that could address his needs. Advised to seek treatment in Jakarta, the family faced uncertainty about where to turn. 

A Ray of Hope Through Connection 

It was through a relative’s introduction that the family learned about Tzu Chi. Over the next four years, Tzu Chi volunteers supported them in their quest for medical treatment. Their persistence bore fruit on October 12, 2024, when Abidzar successfully underwent jaw implant surgery at Tzu Chi Hospital. The surgery marked a turning point for the family. The relief was palpable as the parents witnessed their son’s condition improve. “We have waited so long for this day,” Nazaruddin shared. 

 As Abidzar’s health began to recover, his parents’ hopes for his future grew brighter. Nazaruddin expressed his aspirations: “I hope he will grow to be a kind and patient person, inspired by those who have supported us.” Reflecting on the volunteers who walked alongside them, he added, “The volunteers genuinely helped us regardless of religion or race, giving selflessly of their time and resources to support Abidzar until he could have the surgery. I cannot thank them enough." 

Recovery and Renewal 

Abidzar’s story is one of resilience and hope. The care he received not only improved his physical condition but also uplifted his family. The volunteers’ support provided emotional strength and helped the family navigate this difficult journey. 

Looking ahead, Abidzar’s parents are optimistic about his future. They dream of the day when he can eat and speak without difficulty, knowing that the road ahead is brighter than before. The family’s experience stands as a testament to the profound impact that dedicated support and empathy can have on individuals facing adversity.
