As the tuk-tuk navigated the dusty roads of Ganga Bigha, in Bodh Gaya, India, volunteer Hui-Lee Cheok noticed three children walking under the scorching sun. "Are they part of our tutoring program?" she asked teacher Upendra Kumar. “Yes, they are!” he responded enthusiastically. Without hesitation, the tuk-tuk stopped, providing a timely ride to the young students, ensuring their punctual arrival at the tutoring class—an everyday act that highlights the dedication to making education accessible.

On the afternoon of March 4, 2025, the Ganga Bigha tutoring classroom was abuzz with energy. After a long day at school, students eagerly returned for supplementary lessons. Among them was Priyanshu Kumari, a soft-spoken girl from the lower grades. She quietly picked up a broom, diligently sweeping dust, sheep droppings, and leaves from the classroom floor—a challenging task for her small hands, yet her determination was evident.

As the classroom was tidied, Priyanshu and her classmates unrolled the tarps, smoothing them out before taking their places. This simple, daily routine reflects their dedication and love for learning.

Confidence Blooms in Math Class

The day’s focus was a math review session. Three students who had previously missed a test arrived to complete their make-up exams. Volunteer Hui-Lee Cheok assisted teacher Upendra Kumar by grading the papers promptly, allowing all students to engage in the review session together.

The improvement was noticeable, with most students scoring above 50—a significant leap from their earlier performances. As Upendra reviewed answers with the older students, their confidence grew. While some made careless errors, often accompanied by laughter and regret, these moments highlighted the importance of attention to detail and patience. The students recognized that with a bit more care, they could achieve even better results.

Teacher Upendra emphasized the importance of using tools like rulers and writing neatly. “Math isn’t just about numbers; it’s about developing life skills like precision and responsibility,” he encouraged. He hoped that the students would cultivate the habit of being meticulous in their studies.

One of the standout students, sixth-grader Antara Kumari, shared her sincere appreciation during a class discussion. “We should always be grateful to our parents and everyone around us,” she said. “I’m especially thankful to Tzu Chi volunteers for creating this learning platform and putting so much effort into helping us.”

After class, the education team decided to visit Antara Kumari’s home. Her mother warmly welcomed them into a bustling household filled with laughter and children. Antara, the second eldest of six, stood out for her discipline and emerging aspirations.

Antara shared her evolving dreams: “I used to want to be successful in the conventional sense, but after meeting Tzu Chi volunteers, I now dream of studying in Taiwan, becoming financially independent, and maybe even working there someday.” Her mother, touched yet concerned about Antara’s grades, gently reminded her, “But your grades aren’t very strong.”

Volunteer Hui-Lee encouraged her, “You’ll need to work harder and improve your English—but I believe in you!” With a shy smile, Antara nodded, determination shining in her eyes.

Planting the Seeds of Hope

Education is a long-term investment, and its effects often emerge gradually. The tutoring class in Ganga Bigha not only enhances academic skills but also serves as a lifeline, extending educational opportunities to children in need.

On the journey back, as the dusty sunset gave way to a dim sky, volunteers reflected on the students’ progress. From aimlessness to clear aspirations, the growth they witnessed filled them with quiet joy. Every child holds the potential for a bright future, and with patience and care, these seeds of hope are beginning to bloom.

Antara’s dream to study in Taiwan is a clear example of how education and the support of volunteers can open new paths for students. Tzu Chi’s commitment ensures that students like Antara Kumari have the opportunities to pursue their dreams and build a better future.

Through consistent effort and compassionate guidance, Tzu Chi is not only enhancing academic performance but also nurturing the dreams and aspirations of young minds. As these seeds of hope take root, the future looks brighter for the children of Ganga Bigha.
