On August 15, representatives from the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Tzu Chi Foundation, and Zhu-feng Crane Engineering (竹風起重行) joined staff at the Catholic Hua-Kuang Social Welfare Foundation’s Intelligent Development Center in Taiwan for a meaningful donation ceremony. The event celebrated the delivery of 70 refurbished computers, a collaborative effort that is already making a difference for both staff and service users.

Bridging the Digital Divide

The computers, originally retired from ITRI, were still in good condition, with most retaining 70 to 80 percent of their usable life. Tzu Chi volunteers took on the task of refurbishing, assembling, and preparing the devices for new users. Zhu-feng Crane Engineering provided logistical support, ensuring the computers arrived safely at their new home.

This partnership not only extended the life of valuable resources but also reduced electronic waste, reflecting a shared commitment to environmental sustainability and resource circulation.

Expanding Opportunities for Service Users

For the Hua-Kuang Foundation, the arrival of these computers is more than just an equipment upgrade. Many staff members and service users rely on computers for daily administrative work and educational activities. The new devices are expected to improve work efficiency and, importantly, provide more opportunities for service users to engage with information technology.

A representative from the Hua-Kuang Foundation expressed gratitude for the donation, noting that the computers will help bridge the digital divide for those they serve. The support not only boosts their work but also opens up new learning experiences for service users.

A Legacy of Giving

The Tzu Chi Foundation’s recycled computer initiative began in June 2021, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan. As students shifted to online learning, volunteers noticed that many children from disadvantaged families lacked access to computers. This observation sparked a movement to collect, refurbish, and distribute used computers to those in need.

Over the past four years, the program has delivered 1,850 computers across Taiwan and even overseas, helping students and organizations continue their education and work despite challenging circumstances.

A Sustainable Path Forward

The recent donation to the Hua-Kuang Foundation is a testament to what can be achieved when organizations come together for a common cause. By giving new life to old equipment, the project not only supports those in needs but also promotes environmental responsibility.

As the Hua-Kuang Foundation integrates these computers into their daily operations, the impact will be felt in improved services, greater access to technology, and a renewed sense of possibility for staff and service users alike.
