A Decade of Collaboration

Since 2015, Tzu Chi has worked in partnership with the Healey International Relief Foundation and Caritas Freetown to bring aid to Sierra Leone. In a country where over half the population lives on less than $2 USD a day, this initiative has brought hope and sustenance to families facing extreme hardships. The rice has reached vulnerable communities, including orphans, widows, and families devastated by the Ebola epidemic.

Shanti, a coordinator for the Southern Ebola Survivors Association, explained the significance of the timing: “At this time of year, rice prices are high and food is scarce, especially for those without jobs and with many children. These supplies come just in time.”

Facing Challenges Together

The Ebola outbreak in 2014 was devastating for Sierra Leone, with over 14,000 infections and nearly 4,000 deaths. Families were torn apart, leaving countless children orphaned and many households dependent on single parents. Remote towns such as Koindu, at the epicenter of the crisis, were among the hardest hit.

For families like Bintu's, the rice distributions have offered stability in uncertain times. Bintu, a mother who lost her husband to Ebola, shared: “I need to balance household expenses to ensure my children can get an education. The rice came just in time, allowing me to send my children to school.”

Sustaining Hope

As Sierra Leone continues to grapple with high unemployment and food shortages, the ongoing support of international partnerships provides a glimmer of hope for many. Each delivery of rice is more than just food—it is a source of reassurance and strength for communities striving to rebuild.

With continued collaboration, the shared efforts of organizations and individuals will help to create a more stable future for the people of Sierra Leone.
