In Taichung, Taiwan, a unique initiative at Tzu Chi's Dongda Jing Si Hall, the Eco-Friendly Assistive Device Platform is transforming lives by providing free, unlimited-use assistive devices. Since its establishment in October 2023, the platform has become a vital resource for the community, offering essential items like wheelchairs, hospital beds, and walkers. Driven by a spirit of mutual aid, the platform relies on a diverse group of volunteers, including rehabilitation therapists, nurses, mechanics, and family members of device users. Among them are two high school students, Yi-Chuan Chen (陳奕權) and Kai-Cheng Cheng (鄭凱宬), whose dedication brings youthful energy to this compassionate endeavor.

Diverse Hands, Shared Purpose
The Eco-Friendly Assistive Device Platform at Dongda Jing Si Hall thrives on the varied expertise and experiences of its volunteers. Yi-Chuan Chen and Kai-Cheng Cheng, affectionately known as the "Dongda All-Purpose Little Helpers," are shining examples of this commitment. Despite their young age, these high school freshmen are indispensable. On weekend mornings, while many of their peers are still asleep, Yi-Chuan Chen and Cheng Kai-Cheng are already at the recycling station, quietly moving between tasks.
These two young men, though brought to the platform by different circumstances, work seamlessly as a team. Every Saturday morning, they arrive at the Dongda campus, don their volunteer vests, and efficiently handle the incoming devices. One unloads from the vehicle; the other passes items on the ground, their coordination so natural that few words are needed. Whether sweating under the sun or bending in the cold wind, their faces consistently show smiles.
Ingenuity and Compassion in Action
Their enthusiasm extends beyond recycling. They are often found cleaning and repairing devices, and sometimes accompany volunteers to deliver hospital beds and wheelchairs to families. During one delivery, when a volunteer accidentally injured themselves, the boys immediately stepped forward to help, taking on the heavy lifting. Their thoughtfulness and composure impressed everyone. Volunteer Kuan-Hui Li (李冠慧) shared with a smile, "Whatever tools are needed, they can make them themselves. For example, it was difficult to transport assistive devices on the ramp, so they designed a handcart to easily push and transport recycled items." This resourcefulness and creativity have simplified many complex tasks, making them reliable helpers for all.
Finding Direction Through Service
Yi-Chuan Chen, from a single-parent family, initially joined the platform by chance. Now, helping on weekends has become a grounding part of his life. He explained that after each task, seeing the relieved smiles of the elderly fills him with warmth. His time here has also taught him to use various tools and even perform simple repairs, making him a truly versatile helper.
Kai-Cheng Cheng, through repeated deliveries, has witnessed the profound needs of many families in the community. "I hope to deliver more assistive devices to more people who need help," he stated simply, a sentiment that reflects his growing sense of purpose. Through his service, he has gained confidence and a strong sense of responsibility, willingly dedicating his weekends to this meaningful work.

A Cycle of Love and Sustainability
"Giving without expectation, the heart is at ease and joyful." This aphorism encapsulates the spirit of the Dongda Eco-Friendly Assistive Device Platform. From community residents to professionals, from mothers to high school students, every hand contributes silently, ensuring timely assistance reaches those in need. The platform is more than just a hub for resource recycling; it is a place that unites hearts and makes compassion a daily practice.
As its services expand, the Dongda Jing Si Hall Eco-Friendly Assistive Device Platform continues to support the community, extending its simple yet powerful kindness to more families. The synergy of youthful energy and the wisdom of elders weave together the most touching stories of service in this region.
