Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the entire nation has been subject to bombings and killings, forcing its people to flee to various countries. Poland has emerged as an important host nation for those displaced. Tzu Chi has given humanitarian aid in Poland, providing essential supplies, gift cards, and more. Moreover, the organization is actively planning and implementing medium to long-term initiatives, such as language courses and vocational training, to assist Ukrainian refugees in finding stability and opportunities in their new country.
Give with Care, Accompany with Love
On July 24, 2023, the Poland Volunteer Care Team, composed of Tzu Chi volunteers from Germany and Austria, arrived in Opole to collaborate on charitable projects with the local community. Thanks to thorough networking and on-site assessment, they have developed a strong capability. A significant meeting with local entrepreneur Radoslaw Atlas and Hui Ju Chen-Atlas (陳惠如) shed light on over a year of care initiatives and laid a promising foundation for future collaboration.

The team also visited Caritas Archidiecezji Lubelskiej in Lublin, to express gratitude to Father Łukasz Mudrak, its responsible figure. In Lublin, the volunteers, in partnership with Ukrainian volunteer Anastasiia, have extended immediate aid to Ukrainian elders and families. Through monthly distributions, Anastasiia and her fiancé Sergii tirelessly have worked behind the scenes, solving issues and creating heartwarming moments.
The food packages were thoughtfully assembled to include essential nutrients tailored to the needs of the elders. Inspired by the volunteers, the beneficiaries actively engaged in giving back, to express their gratitude towards Tzu Chi. The initiative raised 309 Polish zlotys (about US$75) in donations and accumulated nine hours of volunteer service.

The volunteers fostered a warm atmosphere during distributions, bringing a sense of happiness to the beneficiaries. Children, in particular, embraced caregiving, showing compassion, responsibility, and kindness. The volunteers felt gratified to see these values take root. While some beneficiaries faced formidable challenges, like Nina Plakhotna, they showed a resilient spirit. The volunteers served as vital pillars of support, lending a compassionate ear and bolstering their courage.
Language Certificate: Valuable EU Recognition
On July 29, the Poland Volunteer Care Team, of Tzu Chi volunteers from Germany and Austria, held a graduation ceremony for Ukrainian refugees sponsored by the Tzu Chi Foundation who had undergone Polish language courses. They will be awarded Polish language graduation certificates accredited by the European Union. This certificate holds practical value as it attests to language proficiency across European nations; this has significant relevance for employment and education.
During the graduation ceremony, German volunteer Shu-wei Chen (陳樹微) delivered a speech on behalf of the Tzu Chi Foundation. She expressed gratitude to Caritas and the Catholic University of Lublin for their collaboration in teaching. She emphasized Tzu Chi's continued care for the Ukrainian people and conveyed Master Cheng Yen's spirit of compassionate concern.

Father Łukasz Mudrak, head of Caritas Archidiecezji Lubelskiej, also expressed gratitude to the Tzu Chi Foundation and its volunteers. He acknowledged the positive impact of language and cultural courses on the integration and well-being of the Ukrainian community.
Beyond language instruction, the course also provided practical life information and employment guidance. The students appreciated the language learning opportunities provided by Tzu Chi, recognizing its significance in assimilating into local society and seeking employment.

The certificate award ceremony fostered an inclusive atmosphere. Students radiated smiles, interacting with volunteers and expressing gratitude. Tzu Chi volunteers extended their blessings for their successful integration into local life and for embracing new challenges with a sense of optimism.
This collaboration has facilitated better integration of Ukrainian refugees into Polish society, nurtured new friendships, and offered them a brighter future. Their efforts won the endorsement of the European Union through this certification; this will serve as a valuable asset for their future learning and employment endeavors.

Endless Love and Care
The Tzu Chi Care Team, along with local volunteers in Lublin, once again visited The Little Prince Hospice, to provide much-needed diapers and assistance to Ukrainian children and families with special medical needs. Volunteers not only delivered the essential supplies and financial aid but also engaged in games, dancing, and conversation with the children, creating moments of joy.

Tzu Chi's aid in Lublin began with the concern of overseas students; the new student volunteers received praise for injecting new vitality into the volunteer team. Special recognition was given to two students, Shana Zhao (趙昱萱) and Ellie Chen (陳皓昀), who not only enthusiastically helped but also demonstrated their professional skills during emergency relief efforts. Blessings were extended to these students for their academic and medical pursuits, encouraging them to continue their compassionate endeavors and contribute to more acts of kindness by Tzu Chi.
A Jing Si Aphorism says:” Nothing is impossible with confidence, perseverance, and courage.”
