In November 2024, Zimbabwe faced a dire food crisis that threatened both human lives and wildlife. Tzu Chi’s 600-ton maize aid mission brought relief to 60,000 families while protecting the country’s elephants from culling, demonstrating respect for life and solidarity in the face of crisis.
Addressing an Agricultural Crisis
Zimbabwe’s agriculture suffered under the effects of El Niño, which delayed rains and disrupted the planting of maize, the country’s staple crop. This left 2.7 million people hungry and forced the government to consider drastic measures, including culling elephants for meat. Recognizing the urgency, Tzu Chi launched a large-scale aid mission, delivering 600 metric tons of maize flour in two phases to seven provinces, benefiting approximately 30,000 households.
Overcoming Procurement Challenges
Securing the maize flour presented significant challenges. Strict genetic certification standards complicated procurement efforts, but Tzu Chi volunteer Tino Chu collaborated with local supplier Kaluz and Tzu Chi South Africa to meet requirements. Their perseverance ensured the timely delivery of certified maize flour, avoiding delays in aid distribution.
First Phase of Distribution: A Lifeline for Harare
The first phase of distribution began on November 29 in Harare. Harare Provincial Governor Tavengwa attended the event, expressing gratitude, “This aid not only addresses our immediate food crisis but also reflects profound respect for life,” he remarked.
Tzu Chi volunteers meticulously organized the distribution, ensuring that each of the 15,000 households received a 10-kilogram bag of maize flour. For families struggling with hunger, this lifeline brought immediate relief and a renewed sense of hope.
Protecting People and Wildlife
The aid mission had an unprecedented impact, not only alleviating human suffering but also sparing Zimbabwe’s wildlife. With sufficient food provided to affected communities, the government no longer needed to pursue elephant culling. “This is not just food; it’s a symbol of how solutions can protect both people and animals,” a local volunteer shared.
A Zimbabwean mother who received aid expressed her relief. “We’ve been so worried about feeding our children. This flour will make sure no one goes to bed hungry tonight.”
Dedication Amid Challenges
The success of this mission underscores the dedication of Tzu Chi volunteers, whose persistence ensured aid reached those in greatest need. Despite logistical difficulties, their commitment to serving humanity and wildlife alike resonated with the community.
Residents in Harare shared their heartfelt appreciation, with one recipient saying, “It’s not just the food, but the love and care behind it that touches us.”
Looking Ahead
The second phase of Tzu Chi’s maize distribution will expand relief efforts, providing essential food to more households across Zimbabwe. Beyond addressing the immediate crisis, Tzu Chi volunteers continue to search for sustainable solutions and fostering resilience among the country’s vulnerable populations. By bridging communities and wildlife conservation, this effort has created a powerful example of how coordinated humanitarian efforts can uplift lives and preserve harmony with nature.
