In the close-knit village of Silaunja, India, a difficult situation became a testament to the strength of community. When 65-year-old Ramvriksh Manjhi suffered a fall on January 27, 2025, and fractured his hip, accessing adequate medical care seemed impossible due to financial constraints. Forced to rely on over-the-counter painkillers, Ramvriksh endured debilitating pain.

News of Ramvriksh's plight spread quickly. On February 8th, at a local gathering, his daughter, Suman Devi, shared her father's situation with those present. This caught the attention of local Tzu Chi volunteers, Endrajeet Paswan and Sanjay Singh. Moved by Ramvriksh's situation, they immediately visited him to assess the situation and explore options for medical assistance.

Finding a Path Forward

After reviewing Ramvriksh’s X-rays, Dr. Shree Prakash Singh diagnosed a femoral neck fracture and recommended surgery. The estimated cost was 100,000 Indian Rupees (approximately $1,150 USD), a sum that seemed insurmountable. However, the local volunteers, along with Ramvriksh's family, were determined to find a solution.

The medical team outlined three potential courses of action: traction followed by hip replacement surgery, a less invasive osteotomy, or non-surgical management with walking aids and pain medication. Ultimately, prioritizing Ramvriksh's long-term well-being and mobility, the family, in consultation with the volunteers and doctors, opted for the most comprehensive treatment for Ramvriksh to undergo hip replacement surgery.

On February 12th, the volunteers accompanied Ramvriksh to Shree Orthopedics Hospital for his admission. He was understandably anxious, but reassured by the presence of his daughter, Suman, who would stay by his side.

A Family United by Hope

Prior to the surgery, Dr. Singh took the time to thoroughly explain the procedure, potential risks, and necessary post-operative care to Ramvriksh and his family. This careful communication helped to ease their concerns and ensure they were fully prepared. On February 14th, the surgery was successfully performed, with Ramvriksh’s son, Ravi Manjhi, providing vital emotional support. The successful surgery marked a turning point, as the family dared to envision a future where Ramvriksh could walk again, free from pain.

The recovery process began smoothly, with Ramvriksh immediately experiencing relief. His daughter, Suman, and son, Ravi, worked together, taking turns to provide around-the-clock care and support, which also strengthened their familial ties. The ongoing presence and encouragement of the local volunteers also played a crucial role in bolstering the family's spirits.

As Ramvriksh continues his journey toward restored health, volunteers have emphasized the importance of proper nutrition and exercise for a successful rehabilitation. His story, and the support he received, serves as a reminder of the profound impact that can be achieved when communities come together, offering unity, compassion, and renewed hope in the face of adversity.
