A Refugee Family's New Beginning in Texas
Since the 1970s, Afghanistan has faced waves of conflict, pushing countless families to flee their homeland in search of safety. For Bruce (alias) and his family, escaping to the U.S. was their only chance at survival. Yet, upon arriving in Houston with his wife and two children, Bruce quickly realized that starting anew in a foreign land was far from easy.
Having secured a Special Immigrant Visa (SIV), Bruce hoped to build a stable life for his family. However, unfamiliar surroundings, financial struggles, and uncertainty loomed over them. It was during these difficult times that Tzu Chi volunteers in Texas stepped in, offering support beyond just food supplies.
A Tailored Support Approach
Bruce’s fluency in English became a key advantage. While the family initially received $400 USD a month from Tzu Chi to help them get by, Bruce soon found employment and felt confident enough to pause financial aid. Yet, volunteers continued visiting, ensuring the family’s well-being and offering additional necessities.
"Most importantly, he was able to get a car, and his language skills helped him adapt quickly," said volunteer Chu-Ping Huang, pleased with Bruce’s progress toward self-sufficiency.
Understanding that every family faces unique challenges, Tzu Chi volunteers adjusted their aid accordingly. Some donated essential household items, while others looked for ways to enhance the family’s living conditions. One outstanding need was a washing machine—something volunteers hoped to secure through further donations.
A Community’s Collective Effort
When volunteers visited Bruce’s home, they noticed several missing essentials. Through a donation network, they gathered items such as a television, a computer, and clothing. Volunteer Alice Situ was particularly moved by this effort.
"I remember when I first immigrated to the U.S.," she shared. "Someone helped me, and now I have the chance to give back. It feels great knowing I can make a difference." Alice donated unused items from her home, believing that repurposing them for those in need was far better than discarding them.

A Young Heart Full of Gratitude
Bruce’s daughter, Cindy (alias), was especially delighted when volunteers gifted her beloved cartoon character toys and school supplies. She excitedly expressed thanks, showing her appreciation through her polite and thoughtful actions.
Volunteer Jennifer An, who gave Cindy the toys, reminisced about her own journey as an immigrant decades ago. "It’s not about how much you receive, but how much warmth is shared," she noted. Bruce and his wife, now employed, were grateful that their children could continue their studies without disruption.

The Ripple Effect of Kindness
Reflecting on the care he received, Bruce expressed deep gratitude. "This unconditional love is priceless," he said. "I was lost, unsure of how to navigate life here. But with Tzu Chi’s help, I found my footing." Now, Bruce hopes to extend the kindness he experienced. "When you help me, I must help others. That’s how humanity works—it reminds me of the goodness and gratitude we should all share."
