A Journey Towards Empowerment
In March 2025, Tzu Chi Foundation showcased its commitment to advancing gender equality and improving women's lives at the 69th United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) in New York. Among its many impactful initiatives, Tzu Chi’s vocational sewing training program in Nepal stood out as a symbol of hope and transformation. This program equips women with the tools and skills needed to achieve economic independence, laying the foundation for long-term change in their families and communities.

Transforming Lives Through Skill Training
In Nepal, where traditional gender roles often limit women’s opportunities, Tzu Chi’s sewing class initiative is creating ripples of transformation. Women from marginalized communities are learning how to craft and produce garments, which enables them to generate a sustainable income. This newfound financial stability not only improves their living conditions but also ensures that their children can attend school, breaking cycles of poverty.
By fostering self-confidence and providing a pathway toward financial independence, the program is reshaping societal norms, empowering women to take charge of their futures.
Collaborating for a More Equal World
During CSW69, Tzu Chi joined forces with global organizations like International Zonta and UNICEF to discuss critical issues such as violence against girls. At one of the forums, Tzu Chi’s representative, Branda Ng, emphasized the urgent need for collective action. “At the current pace, It will take 134 years to achieve global gender equality,” she noted, calling for stronger partnerships among religious groups, NGOs, and international bodies to bridge the gap.

Art as a Medium for Change
At an art exhibition during the conference, Tzu Chi highlighted the creative talents of women from Lumbini, Nepal. Their handmade crafts were showcased and sold on-site, helping to raise funds for Tzu Chi's LA Wildfire relief efforts. More importantly, the event celebrated cross-cultural collaboration as women from different backgrounds exchanged stories and encouraged one another to continue their efforts.

Sewing a Future of Hope
Tzu Chi’s belief that “a single piece of fabric and a sewing machine can change lives” is embodied through its initiatives in Nepal. By empowering women with vocational skills, the foundation is fostering a culture of resilience and independence. These efforts not only enable women to rebuild their lives but also allow them to contribute meaningfully to their communities' recovery and growth. The ripple effect of this empowerment stretches far beyond sewing—it is a stitch in the fabric of a better tomorrow.
