Malnutrition casts a long shadow over many developing nations, and Mozambique is no exception. Nearly half (42.5%) of Mozambican children under the age of five face chronic malnutrition, and a significant 5% struggle with acute malnutrition. This silent crisis tragically claims young lives every day.

Reaching Families in Need

Across Mozambique, Tzu Chi volunteers are working to combat this urgent problem. The core of their approach is simple yet effective: providing nutritious food and empowering mothers with the knowledge to nourish their children.

On April 1, at the Guara-Guara Health Center, rice, beans, peanuts, and multigrain powder were distributed to 80 children's families to improve malnutrition. The multigrain powder brought hope and smiles to a mother's face. | Photo: Ezra Millise | Mozambique | 2024/04/01

Since June 2021, Tzu Chi's nutritional assistance program has been a lifeline for vulnerable children in Beira City and Nhamatanda County. The program provides essential staples like rice and Jing Si Multi-Grain Instant Mix. Volunteers also take the time to educate local mothers on best practices for infant and child feeding.

Extending a Helping Hand to Maputo

In January 2025, Tzu Chi extended its reach to Maputo, Mozambique's capital city, launching a six-month nutritional assistance program. Mothers, already aware of the positive impact of the multigrain powder, arrived with hopeful anticipation.

Stories of Change: Hope in Every Meal

The impact of Tzu Chi's efforts is most evident in the stories of the families they serve.

“My child was very underweight and often sick,” shared one mother from Guara-Guara in Buzi, Sofala Province, where Tzu Chi distributed food to 80 families on April 1st. For many, the daily struggle for food had extinguished dreams before they even began.

Emilia, a local nutritionist, highlighted the broader challenge:

"These children are not only malnourished but also disabled."

With the consistent support of Tzu Chi, the situation is changing. Malnourished children are gaining weight, their cheeks are filling out, and their health is improving.

“Since he started eating the baby food, his weight has improved significantly. He has recovered a lot, and even his face looks different," another mother explained gratefully.

"During this period, I saw my daughter grow, and this week she has successfully regained her health," another added. "I am truly grateful for this program's continued support for our children."

The Urgency of Compassion

The six-month program has reached 332 households since January 2025. In a world where a lack of food means a fight for survival, Tzu Chi's nutritional assistance is more than just a meal – it's a beacon of hope. By fighting hunger, volunteers offer a chance for a healthier future.
