In the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Mandalay, Myanmar, Tzu Chi volunteers are bringing more than just material aid to those in need. Alongside rice and cooking oil, a small but symbolic gift—Rice Banks—is being handed out, encouraging a culture of mutual support.

The concept of the Rice Bank is simple: Save a handful of rice each day—no matter how small—and it can help someone else in need. Similar to saving coins, this act of saving and giving stirs a sense of empowerment and emotional healing among the recipients.
"This Rice Bank isn’t about how much we save," explained Tzu Chi volunteer Nandar Aung Aye, emphasizing, "Even saving five or ten grains a day can make a difference."
Transforming Despair into Hope

For many residents, the simple act of saving rice has provided a way to regain control of their lives. Daw Thinn Maw Win, a local resident, expressed how this initiative is changing her perspective: "Saving some rice from what we eat to help others—it has lifted my sorrow."
But the Rice Banks aren't the only reminders of resilience in Myanmar. More than 20 years after Cyclone Nargis devastated the region, some of its survivors have become Tzu Chi volunteers themselves. Wearing their volunteer uniforms, they now inspire others to give back.
"It was hard at first," reflected Ding Ding Te, another recipient, "but now, everyone is donating. We can live peacefully knowing we’re helping each other."

Volunteers like U Nesanda and his daughters are finding even greater joy in giving than receiving. "Other organizations don’t collect names and distribute like Tzu Chi," said U Nesanda, "We deeply respect their effort." His eldest daughter, Kyao Su Lai, recalls the first time she encountered Tzu Chi during the 2008 Cyclone Nargis recovery efforts. "I was touched by how respectfully Tzu Chi helped others," she said.
Her younger sister, Dae Su, added: "I can't afford to donate money, but I’m glad I can contribute my time and effort."
A Circle of Love and Support
Through their continuous aid, Tzu Chi volunteers are not just distributing resources—they are uplifting spirits and rebuilding a sense of community. Every grain of rice saved, every heartfelt gesture, is a testament to how love and kindness can heal even the deepest wounds.
In a place where despair once loomed large, small acts of giving have become the most powerful remedy, proving that love truly has the power to comfort and heal.
