In the heart of Merlo, Buenos Aires, Argentina, the summer heat was not the only thing weighing heavily on the minds of local families. As the new school year approached, many parents faced the daunting challenge of affording basic school supplies. On February 23rd, 2025, Tzu Chi volunteers arrived at the "Angel Guardian" Kitchen, bringing not just stationery, but also a sense of relief and community support.
A Helping Hand in Times of Need
The previous year, Tzu Chi had organized a Year-End Blessing event at the Angel Guardian Kitchen. With summer temperatures rising, the volunteers, in consultation with Eva, who runs the kitchen, decided to construct a shelter in front of the kitchen. Tzu Chi committed to providing clear plastic sheets for the roof.
However, Hector, Eva's partner in running the kitchen, was supposed to provide the dimensions for the plastic sheets but had not done so. On February 20, Tzu Chi volunteers took the opportunity to visit the kitchen while attending an event at the "Sun and Green Association" (Asociación Civil Sol y Verde sin Frontera).
Upon arrival, they discovered that Eva was at the hospital with Hector, who had suffered a stroke on February 17. Diagnosed with facial paralysis, Hector's condition had not improved despite medical treatment. The volunteers promised to bring Norberto Chao, a volunteer skilled in acupuncture, to treat Hector during the upcoming stationery distribution. Eva expressed her gratitude, though her worry was palpable.
A Community Comes Together
Word of the Tzu Chi stationery distribution spread quickly, and by the time the thirteen volunteers arrived, the street outside the Angel Guardian Kitchen was filled with hopeful faces. Parents understood that education was crucial for their children's future, but without the necessary supplies, their children would be at a disadvantage.
While the volunteers set up the distribution area, Norberto Chao began treating Hector in the kitchen's living room. After assessing his symptoms, Norberto confirmed the diagnosis of facial paralysis and used acupuncture to help relieve Hector's pain.
Outside, volunteers hung a banner and arranged the stationery neatly. Miguel Angel Sixto Ali, a local volunteer, introduced Tzu Chi to the residents, sharing stories of how the organization was founded in Taiwan during difficult times and how its members continue to help those in need.
Volunteer Chiu Shu-Yu shared Master Cheng Yen's teaching: "Speak kind words, think good thoughts, do good deeds, and walk the right path." The residents responded with warm applause, appreciating the message of kindness and compassion.
Eva, usually reserved, was encouraged by a resident to express her gratitude. She thanked Tzu Chi for their support, and the residents, in turn, thanked Eva for her dedication. The community's generosity was evident as residents eagerly contributed to the donation box. These funds were intended to support ongoing charitable efforts, including helping those affected by recent hardships in other regions.
The gathering concluded with everyone joining hands to sing "Love and Care," a heartfelt prayer for healing and hope. Eva, with hands clasped, prayed earnestly for Hector's recovery, a testament to their shared journey through life's challenges.
Bringing Smiles and Hope

Despite the humid weather, the atmosphere was filled with warmth and joy as parents and children left with smiles, their spirits lifted by the support they received. In total, 121 families and 387 individuals benefited from the distribution.
Healing and Gratitude

After removing the acupuncture needles, Norberto massaged Hector, who felt a noticeable improvement. His relatives observed that his mouth was less crooked, and Hector himself felt sensation returning to his cheeks. Norberto taught him exercises to aid his recovery, and Hector promised to diligently follow through.
At that moment, Eva's laughter and gratitude filled the room, a sign that her worries had eased, replaced by hope and relief.

The Tzu Chi stationery distribution in Merlo was a testament to the power of community and compassion. By providing essential school supplies, Tzu Chi volunteers not only alleviated the financial burden on struggling families but also instilled hope for a brighter future.
