From Darkness to Light

On a heartwarming afternoon of December 1, a team of compassionate volunteers, including Ci-Xiao Li, Leigh Lim, and Tang-Mei Xiao, visited the home of Ukrainian sisters Nadiid and Zoia. This visit was not only a demonstration of the power of love and care but also a touching showcase of how lives can be transformed through compassion.

Nadiid and Zoia fled their war-torn homeland, Ukraine, when the Russo-Ukrainian war began. Their journey to Australia took nine difficult days, passing through many countries before finding safety. Once in Australia, they faced tough challenges like language barriers and financial problems. But with help from their son and the constant support of volunteers, they slowly found peace and stability in their new home.

On the day of the visit, volunteers arrived with gifts of fruits, cookies, and tea, spreading Christmas cheer early. The sisters' warm smiles and welcoming presence at the doorstep made everyone momentarily forget the hardships they had faced. Nadiid, who had recently had eye surgery, happily said, "Everything is clearer now, and my heart feels more open."

Recalling their early days in Australia, Nadiid and Zoia shared how the volunteers' support, from essential supplies to emotional encouragement, made them feel deeply cared for. Today, the sisters have emerged from the shadows, engaging in activities such as knitting hats for premature infants, which they lovingly donate to those in need. "We once received help, and now it brings us immense joy to help others," Nadiid said with a smile.

Zoia also shared her thoughts on knitting: "With each hat I make, I picture the smile of the person who will wear it. It's a feeling I can't describe." Zoia, who had sewn sweaters before, proudly showed her work to the volunteers, highlighting her skill and dedication. "Making hats for premature babies at home is easy now, and the quality is excellent," she added.

The Joy of Giving Back

The sisters' journey from being aid recipients to active helpers has been incredible. They openly admitted that their past suffering had made them feel helpless, but now they've found their ability to be a source of strength for others. The volunteers shared an inspiring story about "receiving with open palms" and "giving with open hearts," highlighting that receiving help empowers one to help more people, while helping others brings deeper happiness. The sisters nodded, fully resonating with this message.

Nadiid, who loves playing table tennis, enthusiastically demonstrated her skills with a paddle, showing her passion and energy. Meanwhile, Zoia, an avid swimmer, talked about how swimming brings her peace and freedom. Looking ahead, the sisters are filled with hope. "We want to continue knitting more hats and participate in more activities, spreading love to those in need," Nadiid said determinedly.

The Power of Love and Resilience

The volunteers' visit that day showed the deep bond between the sisters and their resilience and the enduring power of love. Rising from the ruins of their past, they truly embody the meaning of "finding love amid hardship." Before leaving, the volunteers made a pact with the sisters to join them on their next visit to the hospital to deliver the hats for premature babies—a promise that was met with great excitement.

On the way back, the volunteers' hearts were filled with gratitude. They thanked the sisters for showing them the strength and power of love, reaffirming their belief that seeds of kindness will take root and bloom with life everywhere in the world.
