In September 2024, a catastrophic wildfire swept through São Pedro do Sul in northern-central Portugal, leaving a trail of devastation. Over 150 square kilometers were scorched, lives were lost and hundreds injured. Beyond the immediate danger, the fires left many families without homes and essential resources. In Sul, where over half the population are elderly, the impact was particularly acute. But even in the face of such loss, a resilient community has found renewed hope through international aid.

A Bridge of Compassion Spanning Continents

Responding to the identified needs of 164 affected households, Tzu Chi volunteers mobilized across borders to provide desperately needed relief. A team of 26 volunteers from the UK, Germany, and Switzerland converged in Porto on February 20, 2025. Working with local partner Maria Paiva and the staff of Pingo Doce, a local grocery store chain, the volunteers secured value cards. These cards allowed the fire-stricken families to purchase essential food and supplies, including vegetarian options.

A Day of Dignity and Support

On February 22nd, the community of São Pedro do Sul gathered at the theater, where the distribution transformed into a heart-warming event. The process ran smoothly with volunteers making every effort to accommodate residents.

The event began with songs, videos about Tzu Chi’s global initiatives, and the reading of Dharma Master Cheng Yen’s heartfelt message. The atmosphere grew emotional as attendees participated in a bamboo bank donation ceremony, embodying the spirit of giving back even in hardship.

With compassion, the volunteers handed out the value cards and eco-friendly scarves.

Although the recent wildfires caused immense hardship, the support of Tzu Chi volunteers from around the world has sparked renewed hope among the people of São Pedro do Sul. This act highlights a core belief of Tzu Chi, that compassion knows no borders, and that through collective action, even the most difficult challenges can be overcome.
