On December 14, 2025, emergency food and non-food assistance was provided to 30 households affected by a fire in Ascension Town Community, Freetown, Sierra Leone. The support was delivered in collaboration with Caritas Freetown to help families meet immediate needs following the disaster.

The fire occurred on December 2 and was reportedly caused by faulty electrical wiring. Due to the densely built and largely makeshift housing in the area, the fire spread quickly, destroying 15 homes. Many residents, including children and elderly family members, were left without shelter, food, or basic household items.

Relief distribution for affected households

Each affected household received a relief package consisting of food and non-food items. Food supplies included a 50-kilogram bag of rice, a gallon of vegetable oil, a gallon of palm oil, onions, packets of salt, and assorted seasonings. Non-food items included a blanket and a bag of assorted used clothing suitable for children and elderly family members. Distribution was carried out equitably to ensure that all households received the same assistance.

The distribution began with remarks from Mr. Bob Jones, Head of the Community Disaster Management Committee (CDMC) and President of the CDMCs. He expressed concern for the affected families and reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to working with humanitarian partners to support disaster-affected communities. He also highlighted the importance of preparedness and community cooperation in reducing the impact of future emergencies.

Mr. Sheriff L. Bah, Project Manager of Caritas Freetown, also addressed the gathering. He noted that Caritas has been seeking resources to respond to the fire since the incident occurred, though with limited results to date. He reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to continuing discussions with partners and donors to mobilize additional assistance, particularly to address longer-term needs such as shelter and livelihoods.

Community support

Ms. Margaret Bassie, Representative of the Tzu Chi Foundation in Sierra Leone, delivered the final address. She expressed concern for the affected families and encouraged community members to support one another during the recovery period. She added that the relief effort focused on addressing immediate food needs and noted that the blankets distributed were made from recycled plastic, providing warmth while supporting environmental sustainability.

Following the speeches, beneficiaries queued in an orderly manner, signed the distribution list, and received their relief items. Affected families expressed gratitude for the timely support. Many shared that the assistance would help them meet their most urgent needs as they work to rebuild their lives after the fire.
