A Step Toward Change
In 2023, the Thembakhosa Community Kitchen began its mission to provide meals for children facing hunger. Many parents in this region of South Africa struggle to afford food, leaving their children vulnerable. Six local volunteers—Nobuhle, Diniku, Khomotso, Jabulile, Makati, and Angelina—took the initiative to cook and serve nutritious meals for these children, offering much-needed relief for struggling families.

A Unified Effort
By 2024, the community ktichen supported over 134 children, but resource and space limitations disrupted its operations. Determined to make progress, community leaders found a more suitable space for the community kitchen.

On March 1, 2025, the community kitchen officially reopened in Ivory Park. Though simple, with only walls and a leaky roof, it marks a new beginning. Tzu Chi, together with local volunteers and food bank contributions, provide essential supplies such as rice, beans, oil, and gas stoves. This collaboration ensures the community kitchen can operate consistently and reliably.
The opening ceremony brought 146 community members together, including local leaders, parents, and Tzu Chi volunteers. Leaders Zandie and Lucy expressed their commitment to building a better future: “We want these children to have a safe space, proper nutrition, and care. We hope for continued support to develop this community kitchen further.”

Building More Than Meals
At the event, Brother Emanuel, a Tzu Chi volunteer, shared the foundation’s values of love and compassion. He emphasized that their mission goes beyond food—it’s about creating sustainable community development through education and health resources. Volunteer Welhemina Malele also explained the community kitchen's purpose simply: “We aim to give every child a full meal. It’s more than just surviving—it’s about building hope for their future.”
Tzu Chi volunteers also engaged with the children, teaching hygiene and self-care. A sign-language performance of the song, One Family, brought smiles and a sense of unity to all present.
The Impact on Lives
Interviewed volunteers described the community kitchen as both a place for safe nourishment and an environment where children learn to connect and grow. Volunteer Khomotso emphasized that the community kitchen is more than just a meal stop—it’s a space for learning and community interaction. Jabulile added that seeing the children’s smiles reaffirms the community’s commitment to extend support and resources.
A Brighter Tomorrow
Throughout the ceremony, personal reflections reinforced the community kitchen's significance. Volunteer Emily Lu remarked, “This land carries the hopes of countless children,” while community member Semenya Nkew recalled Tzu Chi’s assistance during a severe flood in 2012 that forged a lasting bond with the local community. Florence Makgato, fondly called “Tzu Chi Mom,” shared how her uniform inspires smiles and pride in nurturing young lives. Tzu Chi South Africa CEO Tim Huang concluded with an invitation: “Compassion isn’t just words; it’s about what we do.”

Spreading Love and Light

The reopening of Thembakhosa Community Kitchen is a powerful symbol of teamwork and love within the community. However, this is just the first step. To support more children, the community kitchen needs more stable resources and facilities. Tzu Chi’s focus extends beyond meals—it’s about instilling values, building confidence, and helping children believe in their ability to shape their futures. With continued efforts and support, Thembakhosa Community Kitchen serves as a beacon of hope, lighting the way toward a brighter tomorrow for the children of South Africa.
