In recent months, Ukrainian elderly individuals seeking refuge in Poland have navigated a landscape filled with legal complexities and economic strain. Many arrived with the hope of finding safety and stability, only to encounter new hurdles that have cast a shadow of uncertainty over their futures.

A Heavy Burden of Uncertainty
For many Ukrainian seniors in Poland, the journey has been fraught with challenges. Securing legal residency often requires proof of employment and a stable home, a difficult task for those limited by age, health, or competition in the job market. Their Ukrainian pensions, when converted, frequently fall short of covering basic living expenses like rent, leaving some with the heart-wrenching prospect of returning to a war-torn homeland.
The situation grew even more precarious with a presidential veto on amendments to a special law designed to aid Ukrainians. This left many feeling lost and anxious about their rights to residency, employment, and social assistance beyond September 30th. This pervasive uncertainty fueled a deep sense of fear and stress, leading many to seek comfort and guidance from Tzu Chi volunteers in Lublin. The atmosphere became heavy with worry, as questions about their future lingered.
Further changes on October 1st tightened support, meaning newly arrived refugees no longer received free accommodation, and elderly individuals lost subsidies for essential prescription medications. This shift brought a wave of urgent requests for financial aid, as many seniors struggled to afford the medicines they needed to stay healthy.
A Comforting Hand in Turbulent Times
Amidst these turbulent times, the unwavering presence of Tzu Chi volunteers has been a beacon of stability and warmth. Through their monthly distribution gatherings, volunteers lovingly create a safe and welcoming haven where elderly beneficiaries can connect, share their stories, and build meaningful friendships. These gatherings are more than just aid distributions; they are vital opportunities for connection, strengthening a sense of belonging and reminding everyone that they are part of a caring community.

Volunteers extend not only practical assistance but also profound emotional comfort, offering a listening ear and a comforting hand as individuals navigate this uncertain period. They help answer pressing questions and guide them to the resources they need. Most importantly, Tzu Chi's support instills a precious sense of hope and security, reassuring them that they are never truly alone.
In August, 260 cash cards were lovingly distributed, followed by another 539 in September and October. These distributions, primarily facilitated by dedicated Ukrainian volunteers alongside two Polish volunteers, ensure a steady supply of food and living subsidies, preventing elderly seniors from feeling isolated and unsupported.
Laughter, Hope, and the Spirit of Giving
To nourish the emotional well-being of the beneficiaries, Tzu Chi volunteers partnered with Caritas Lublin to host a heartwarming drama performance. These events have blossomed into a cherished tradition, bringing much-needed joy and hope into challenging lives.
The "Kurtynka Theatre" children, with their boundless energy, wrote and performed a short, lively fairy tale that culminated in a joyous wedding. Their pure-hearted performance brought smiles, laughter, and a touch of magic to the elderly audience.

A truly heartwarming moment unfolded when these elderly beneficiaries, who diligently follow news from Taiwan, learned about the severe typhoons that struck the island in July and September 2025, causing significant devastation in certain areas. Moved by a profound sense of empathy for others facing hardship, they spontaneously decided to organize a fundraising effort. Their compassion and deep desire to help led them to collect 600 Euros, which they lovingly donated to the typhoon survivors. This incredible act of generosity not only demonstrated their kindness but also highlighted their unwavering spirit of giving, even when they are also struggling themselves.

The volunteer team extends its deepest gratitude to all participating volunteers, the wonderful children, and every individual who has offered their care and taken action. It is through their collective efforts that love and hope continue to shine brightly, even in the darkest of times.
